about
Lois Macdonald
Lois Macdonald is a multidisciplinary artist and musician with over a decade of experience working in the music industry. She is guitarist/synths in Manchester group PINS, and vocalist/guitarist in art punk project Grave Goods. She has recorded around the world and toured extensively with different projects. Lois is also a lecturer in Music and Sound Design at SODA, MMU. Her current research is on AI use in music composition. Her most recent project ‘PATIENCE’ is an ongoing enquiry into the human voice, new technology and extended human expression.

Lecture:
This lecture offers an introduction to the evolving role of artificial intelligence and
algorithmic systems in music composition, drawing on the origins of AI to discuss
contemporary practices. Looking at key tools and techniques, Lois will talk about how
composers and sound artists are integrating AI into their creative workflows, as well
as presenting her own work in this area ‘PATIENCE’.

The lecture will also consider implications for authorship, aesthetics, and creative
labour. Lois will explore how the most recent wave of generative AI is not only
reshaping musical processes but also the wider cultural and economic dynamics of
the music industry.

Whether you’re curious about accessible tools or the cultural implications of
machine-made music, this is an invitation to reflect on this new creative frontier and its wider impact.
