about
Sergey Umroyan
Sergey Umroyan, also known as URMIA, began his way as a composer and sound artist, later focusing on electro-acoustic composition. In the Armenian contemporary music field, he has developed his own distinctive approach. He co-founded Ensemble Assonance and is also the Co-Founder and Producer of Armenian National Music and Amara Publishing, contributing to the international representation of Armenian music.

In 2025, Sergey wrote the ballet Ikona, which was staged at Moscow’s Yermolova Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre, as well as in St. Petersburg.

His music often brings together different textures and sound environments, with the aim of exploring the relationship between sound and movement. Sergey’s work reflects a consistent dedication to creativity, cultural exchange, and the role of music in human experience.

Theatrical Music — Modern Ballet
As a composer specializing in music for modern ballet, I will present the creative and technical aspects of composing for the stage. The seminar will focus on innovative approaches in contemporary music, the use of electronic and acoustic instruments, and the ability to merge these sound worlds into a unified language. Drawing on my work for "Ikona", a ballet staged multiple times in Russia, I will discuss the importance of close collaboration with choreographers and how synchronization of movement and music shapes the overall dramaturgy and emotional impact of a performance.
